Who needs wheels?

Happy Wright Brothers Day, everyone.

Here's a trivia question: who was the first person to take off and land an airplane on wheels?

I think it was Andy Lumley.

Wishing you all a peaceful holiday season and all the best for the New Year!

I think it was Orville Redenbacher.

You better get that thing back to the stable before all this white 'manure' melts.

On wheels? You mean round ones?

Santos Dumont, probably.

Of course, it depends a bit on what you mean by the term "airplane" and "land"....

The real question is, "how much were they charged for extra carry-on luggage".

Santos Dumont flew the Aviao 14 Bis in Brazil with wheels maybe earlier
then the Wright-brothers-none-wheeled-sledded-gixmo slid down that hill on NC's cape,,,,,,,maybe,

Forget the question. You need to check you lens setting. Other than that wonderful Cub, everything in the photo looks so dark and foreboding.

The dark and foreboding bit was the best part of the day!

I was able to squeeze in a short flight between the thawing graupel and the freezing rain.

I want to know: who had to deal with the first runway incursion by clueless spectators?

Outstanding photo find, Evan. Your secret url puzzle was easy enough to decode.

And yes, that's the first documented flight on wheels: October 23, 1906. You have to share the prize money with Tom.

And it's a pretty good candidate for the first documented runway incursion by clueless spectators as well!

Rick get's the First-Flying-Off-Skis Award for the season!

Lucky for you, Andy G wasn't there to spin someone else's plane into your Cub, Rick!

I'll contribute the prize money to a beer fund for SSA state record keepers.

:-).

How did you knock the ice off the wings while flying?

This was an unauthorized flight and not eligible for "first flight on skis". As all candidates know all forms must be filled out in triplicate and post marked no later than the deadline for these sorts of things. Sorry Rick, better luck next year.

Ha! I don't need paperwork when I have the approval of the President.

Yeah, you flew on first official Wright Bros. Day but you can't claim that either because you didn't fill out the entry form.

You gotta play by the rules.
