Spring Training

The weekday slackers are back. Well, one of them, anyway. Congratulations to Evan for being the first club member to make a Vermont flight in 2009.

On Friday, Evan took a tow from Walter Striedieck in Springfield and made a nice 285 km flight. The new waterballast system in T8 must be working well. Check out his 35 mile glide from Randolph to Mt. Ascutney. That's Silver Distance in a single glide.

What were the choices for landouts between Randolph and Mt. Ascutney?

There are some excellent fields at Woodstock -- well East of my flight path but within easy reach. Might be muddy right now, but safe. Barring really unusual sink, I had VSF made from Randolph. With West wind, I could have gotten a bump off of Ascutney if needed -- VSF is an easy glide from the summit (or close) and there are a couple of good (but not trivial) fields just to the South of Ascutney if it doesn't work. These fields are all pitched enough that you must plan accordingly and land uphill. These fields would be well worth a drive by. Here's a picture from the middle of a good field on Gravelin Rd. looking North :-) http://tinyurl.com/dxgsjp

In general, you probably don't want to land between Ascutney & Woodstock and you probably can't land further to the West.
