A four category day

We had a "four category" day today. The FAA defines five categories of aircraft. The four that operated at Post Mills today were Airplane, Glider, Lighter-than-Air, and Rotorcraft. How many airports can claim such diversity?

Today's trivia question is "What is the fifth category?"

Thanks to my friend Chris Yule for showing up in the helicopter today.

I wonder, could I just have the spam, egg, sausage and spam without the spam?

Powered lift. If you want to fly one talk to a Marine recruiter.

Gregg gets the prize!

(I'm thinking of changing the rules of the trivia contest to exclude instructors).

And here's a question I cannot answer: "What compelled the FAA to create the fifth category a few years ago?" The Osprey and the Harrier seem like airplanes to me, and besides, the Marines don't let just anyone fly them.

Get you checkbook out and pre-order a Bell/Agusta 609 http://www.bellagusta.com/air_ba_main.cfm

NASA has been working on ideas for a Civil Tilt rotor about the size of the Osprey for a while now too. ( Don't hold your breath )

And if your ever have the chance to fly an Osprey, helicopter experience is much more useful than airplane.
